Can I study Macedonian as an Adult Learner?

The Macedonian Online School Sts. Kiril & Metodi is one of the very few schools, perhaps a very unique language and cultural educational provider that has a specialised Macedonian language adult learning program. Our school is an Australian based which means that we strive to uphold the standards of the Australian system. Our adult language learning program caters for different levels for beginners, intermediate and advanced linguistic capabilities. For us an adult learner is 18+ or anyone who is not in formal secondary school. However, depending on the person, the educational staff may allow a person above 16 years age to be placed with the adult learners, however that is dependent on many factors.

How do I know which level (foundation, intermediate and advanced) I should commence in my Macedonian language study program?

Here is the brief definition of how we define the different of language capabilities in our program and are as follows:

Beginner (Foundation) profile learners are those learner who do not have command or very limited function of spoken and written Macedonian. Generally, they are new to Macedonian language. Also, they maybe a decedent or have or have had relationships with a Macedonian language speaker and have acquired some words, but have difficulties in understanding, speaking, reading or writing Macedonian.

Intermediate profile learners are those learners who have the command of Macedonian language in spoken and written form. It means that they have a good grasp of the Macedonian Cyrillic Alphabet and reading rules and he or she is able to communicate in everyday life about a number of topics with range of people. Thus, the person would be able to read not so complicated texts and write messages about requests, every day needs and other. They may have grown up in Macedonian speaking family and/or they may have learnt Macedonian through formal instructions which this has enabled them to communicate about present, future and past events, however with some level of difficulties and challenge. Another feature of this level is that the learners need to develop their Macedonian lexicon (vocabulary) in other to widen their areas of communication.

Advanced profile learners are those learners who have command of the Macedonian language, able to speak, read and write Macedonian, thus their language capabilities are developed and able to communicate confidentially informal setting and formal style  with some error and challenge. Also, they may have limited exposure in formal Macedonian register, understanding of Macedonian literature and still have challenge with different language syntax structure and past tenses. Generally, these learners have studied Macedonian through our beginners pathway program or through formal language education.

Style of delivery

Our Macedonian language learning program delivered to a young person or an adult learner it is always interactive and lively. We believe the best way learning is when the learner has lot of opportunities to practise and apply the learning straight away. We do not believe in lecturing or where the educator is the centre of the lesson. Thus, our sessions are conducted in workshop style where learners can practise their micro-Macedonian skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening skills through gradually exposure and introduction. We use the neuroscience to inform our learning, thus we focus on making learning stick.

Recorded sessions

All our sessions are recorded and uploaded on our Learning Management System. You access them any time and go back to review them as this can be helpful in enhancing your leaning. However, we strongly encourage students to participate in the live sessions as this provides them with opportunity of active learning. We do understand that sometimes sessions may need to be missed due to personal and life circumstances, thus the recordings are an excellent way of catching up with the missed learning. Also, you can always book 20 – 30-minute consult with your Educator after you have reviewed the recorded session so you can go through the learning in order to clarify concepts or issues.    

Learning Management System

Your online live classroom learning is supported with you having access to our Learning Management System, where you can access our learning materials such as texts, audio, recorded sessions and quizzes and much more. Also you can communicate with other learners in the group. It is easy to logon with your own e-mail address. We use Google Classroom system which is available anywhere, 24/7.

Class size

Our classes are generally no more than 10 students as we promote active learning. Generally, we like keeping our classes small so learners can have as much opportunity to practise and be provided with extra support.

No tests and examination

We do not believe in test and examination style when comes to reviewing your learning as this promotes unnecessary anxiety and stress. In fact, we believe in collaborative approach of your learning like collaborative assessment style. Assessment is an important process of informing us and you about your learning progress, current and future needs to get you to reach your learning goals. Often you will find that we assess your learning via quizzes, short speaking conversations, presentations, listening exercises and others. If you feel that you would like to pass on the assessment opportunity you are welcome to do so and engage later when you feel more confident.
